This is a special kind of basket, beautifully crafted with designs. The Chakma people call it “Furbareng”, while the Tripura people call it “Khutruk.”
In the past, this basket was used by women of the family to keep their most valuable ornaments and clothes. That is why people say the older the basket is, the more valuable it becomes; because over time, the collection of gold and silver ornaments inside it also grows.
What makes this basket different from others is its specially made with a cover. In Chakma society, the Furbareng is an important part of traditional art. It is especially significant in Chakma weddings. On the wedding day, the groom’s family places jewelry, ornaments, clothes, and other gifts for the bride inside the Furbareng and presents it to her. This practice has continued from ancient times until today.
